GUFF-besøg

af Olav M.J. Christiansen

Monday the 22nd August Danmark had a visit from the two Australians Damien Warman and Juliette Woods, who were this years GUFF-winners. It was a very cosy evening. We had arranged an extraordinary pub-meeting because of this, and people turned up that didn't usually come to Café Kostbar.

Juliette og Damien Damien and Juliette told a lot about what GUFF is and what it isn't. GUFF means "Get Up-and-over Fan Fund" or "Going Under Fan Fund" depending on which way you go. It's all about fans from Australia going to Europe or fans from Europe going to Australia. Each other year you go down and each other year you go up (Australia is meant in the broad sense 'Australasia' and also includes e.g. New Zealand).

Knud Larn was host for the guests, and he had just picked them up at the train station, so they got a taste of Danish pub dinner alongside with some cold beer. Knud had also brought along different (recent) Danish fanzines, so Damien and Juliette could get a little impression of what goes on in Danmark with respect to sf-fandom. This included magazines from various Danish clubs as well as some independent fanzines. They got to browse through: Novum, Himmelskibet, Science Fiction. Subspace and Nyarlathotep.

Everybody then signed in the GUFF guestbook. Meeting so many people obviously means that the GUFF-travellers want to be able to remember who they talked to - also when they get home. The bottomline is that they are supposed to write a report on the trip. This is actually a condition in order to go on this trip (which actually lasted as long as seven weeks they told us). They knew of Fantastik's website, so they had prepared a bit on beforehand.

guff 3In order for them to better be able to remember Danmark and Fantastik they got a couple of presents from us. First they got a couple of Fantasticon 2005 t-shirts, and then they got two personal badges that were special made to the day and occasion:

The evening was spent with a lot of talking, among other things about how the Australian fans work together across the country (or rather how they didn't). We could then tell a bit about the new cooperation between the Nordic countries where we e.g. started the new convention Snorfcon (which takes place in Uppsala, Sweden later this year).badge damienbadge juliette

Knud Larn also wrote a report from the two days the two Australians were in Denmark. It's in Danish, and you can read it here: GUFF-mødet på Kafe Kostbar

Damien and Juliette has their own online journal where you can read more. Follow their trip on: GUFF 2005
